AS YOU MAY RECALL
… 10 years since Dr. Octagon’s groundbreaking first address to the world, Dr. Octagonecologyst, a musical recording with a combination of lyrical alchemy and beat science powerful enough to teleport the first human listeners to rap in the year 3000.
… 7 years since Dr. Dooom murdered Dr. Octagon on the opening track to Dooom’s First Come First Served… Dr. Octagon’s office in the Bronx was boarded up, the nurses obliged to seek alternate means of employment. Thousands of patients in need of rectal rebuilding or removing turtles from their uteruses had to fulfill their medical needs elsewhere. The toll-free hotline 1-800-PP5-1-DOODOO and his space age cell 709 755 6EL3 were both disconnected.
Finally, back again to shock and thrill us after years out in the wilderness, Dr. Octagon goes straight for the jugular with the release of his highly anticipated new album, The Return of Dr. Octagon. Spliced and diced together by the man, Kool Keith, himself and slickly produced by clued up production trio, One Watt Sun, this looks set for some playlist domination.
The One Watt Sun collective, (consisting of John, Ben and Simon) were brought on as the producers. They recorded The Return of Dr. Octagon in a twelfth century turret in the old quarter of Prague, as well as Byron Bay and Melbourne in Australia, and also at One Watt Sun’s current studio space in Berlin. Their musical style as showcased via the new Dr. Octagon record is like a morphing twisted intelligent organism, an animal yet to be named. They enlisted the additional talents of DJ Dexter (the Avalanches) for the Egyptian scratch flavour of Ants and Princess Superstar who features on the song “Eat It”.
The Return Of Dr Octagon hits stores June 25th… but that’s so far away, I’m sure you’re thinking. What do you do with yourself until then? EMCEEIN: (The study and application of rhythmic talk, poetry and divine speech). Commonly referred to as rappin or Rap. Its practitioners are known as emcees or rappers.
The emcee is a Hip Hop poet who directs and moves the crowd by rhythmically rhyming in spoken word. The emcee is a cultural spokesperson. Technically, the emcee is a creation of his/her community whereas the rapper is a creation of his/her recording corporation.
The word emcee comes from the abbreviated form of Master of Ceremonies (M.C.). In its traditional sense, M.C. referred to the hosting of an event ? the master of a ceremony or an event.
In its ancient sense, to emcee meant to pray or to communicate with God. It was used by the Greeks to communicate with their oracles and to pray to their gods.
The earliest known forms of Emceein were done by the ancient priest, sages and philosophers of Africa and Asia. Later in history, the ancient art of Emceein would be practiced by African griots and djelees as they went from village to village teaching (or rather performing) history and important life lessons.
